Forget about TireRack! Just try negotiating with Firestone Tires. Today, I put in an order for a set of 205/55r16 Bridgestone S-03 Pole Positions for $595, including mount and balance. Here's the play by play:

- Went to the Seekonk, Mass. Firestone Tire store (mainly to save on the RI sales tax)

- Asked for the 'buy 3 get one free promotion,' which apparently is an unadvertized deal that might only be good until May, go soon if you want to take advantage.

- Talked him into throwing in the mount and balance for free

- Declined road hazard warranty, disposal (I'm keeping the current tires), and new valve stems

Should have the tires in a day or two. Total with tax about $595. IIRC, you'd pay $665 shipped at the Tire Rack for the same tires (minus the $100 Bridgestone mail-in rebate). Firestone's normal price is $189 a tire, so regular price for the set would be $850 with installation. Just shows it pays to ask.
