This has been discussed quite a few times. Several octane boosting formulas have been mentioned which include a combination of ingredients such as lacquer thinner, acetone, mineral spirits, some deisel fuel and even auto tranny fluid or any thin oil. A mix, and not just one of the solvents such as toluene, blended with at least 10 gallons of gasoline - just enough for octane boosting without doing harm to rubber or plastic fuel system components. As far as how nasty any of those solvents are to work with or be exposed to - they're no worse than gasoline. You inhale too much of it in a non-ventilated space and you'll see talking rabbits and flying pigs, just like gasoline, or drinking enough Jack Daniels on the 4th of July.
