For all the rumours about the seemingly bulletproof old 4-speeds, I understand reality with regards to the 99/c900 to be as follows:
The strongest OE *gearset* is that of the '91- on 5-speed gearboxes
The strongest *pinion bearing assembly* is the one from '89 and later 'boxes (although there *might* have been a further improvement with the '91 gearbox update)
The strongest *casing* is the one of *some* '70s 4-speeds which some sources refer to as 'kokill cast'.
Furthermore, it's impssible to give a power level for which a given transmission will be 'good'. Driving style and the 'style' of the power/torque delivery being important variables.
FWIW, the most powerful roadgoing c900's (~250-300 crank hp) here in my neck of the woods (UK/Benelux/Germany) all run with standard or barely modified (diff cover) gearboxes; all that I know of seem to stand up to everyday driving and multiple track days quite well. If you're into 1/4 mile antics, rally or rallycross, or after bragging rights from the lights, or like to power/slam shift, you will need a *seriously* upgraded gearbox at much lower power levels than that.
