Shifter problem Posted by Craig K [Email] (#1834) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Craig K) on Sat, 25 Apr 2009 12:12:31 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
My 68 has been slowly developing a shifting problem. I converted it to a floor shift back in the mid 70's. In recent years it has been getting difficult to find a location for the shifter where I can get all four gears to engage and not pop out. Slide the shifter forward .25", 2nd and 4th are fine but 1st and 3rd are problem. Move it back and 2nd and 4th are the problem. This time, while looking for the obvious taper pin problem I noticed there was a lot of lateral slop in the brass bushing in the sleeve that connects to the back end of tranny. Looks like my problem. Questions? Has anyone else ever had this problem? Is it possible to remove the sleeve by just moving the engine slightly forward(I have an extra sleeve)or is there a way to remove the bushings in place without using too much force? Don't want to bend anything. The grease trick won't work because the sleeve is open at both ends. The bushing at the engine end of the sleeve also feels a little sloppy.
Thanks for any advice
