Greetings,
My saab 96 ran rough until I did two things. Changed to electronic
points and.....retighted the carburator nuts. The carb was loose.
The later made the biggest difference. I now have lock nuts and will
probably get some semipermanent locktite.
The way to set the idle screw and idle mixture is:
(I've only done this once or twice..so if
anyone has any comment, fell free to interject)
1) open up the mixture until the rpm don't go any higher.
2) adjust the idle screw to 800-900 rpms
3) close the mixture until the engine is about to cut out and
open the mixture screw 1/4 - 1/2 turn.
4) while idling, check the pedal responce. If the engine cuts out or chokes, adjust richer or leaner(which ever helps)
5) Verify that the mixture is set around 1 1/2 to 2 turns
You may want to check the spark plugs and see if they match those picture
from the chilton/haynes manuals.
When you can...ask someone who knows what they are doing to show you
how. After I saw it done, it was much easier.
