The slots are to vent the cabin. This is to help heated air flow thru the cabin and defrost/defog the side and rear windows. Even though early 70's cars like the Sonett were not well sealed in general, an upper flow path is a good thing. I have found that removing the crumbled foam from the outside is fairly easy, as is replacing it from the outside. Any open cell foam will do. Cut it to size and work it in as best you see fit.
