First oil change on my '71 Sonett Posted by NCCaniac [Email] (#352) [Profile/Gallery] (more from NCCaniac) on Mon, 9 May 2011 13:05:55 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
So, it was time for the first oil change on the '71 Sonett I bought last fall. The previous owner had done a fair amount of work on the engine and was not trying to go pristine OEM stock. He had switched to the Weber carb, different air cleaner, and added Edelbrock chrome valve covers and breather cap.
What caught my attention, though, was when I finally realized that the breather cap was on the opposite valve cover from what it shows in the Sonett service manual. From what I understand, on a stock setup, the oil filler cap is on the left side as you face the front of the car (opposite side from the oil dip stick). On this Sonett, the breather cap and oil filler hole is on the valve cover on the right side as you face the car, at the back end toward the rear of the engine block.
Since I am still learning about all variations of Sonetts and the V4 engine, does this mean that when the prior owner was restoring this one that he used a different V4 engine than typically came in a '71 Sonett, or is this just a feature of switching to the Edelbrock valve covers? Does it make any difference in terms of where the oil is poured in (as prior to this I have only changed the oil on my 2000 9-3)?
