Sounds like a failed starter drive, IF the dimensional difference is not a factor. If the business end of the starter appears identical including number of teeth on the drive gear and the difference is only in body length, there should be no problem. The drive is not too difficult to replace, check your manual. Or any starter/alternator shop should be able to help you.
A failed drive suggests that you got a used starter. If so, dealing with the brushes and bearings and turning the commutator will save you trouble down the road.
