If all cars are as the PO of your car described I would eliminate the interior sliding bolt too. Best idea seems to be to install generic fob activated electric door lock solenoids in place of the sliding bolt handle with a single additional switch inside the car to lock/unlock the doors.
You could always unlock the car from the outside that way regardless which of the independent locking mechanisms was used (provided the battery didn't die with the electric locks engaged).
