Hot Spark electronic ignition conversion Posted by Trogdor42 [Email] (#2494) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Trogdor42) on Sat, 2 Mar 2019 20:05:22 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Well I took my first baby steps today and converted my distributor from points and condenser to a Hot Spark system. I know many of you have used the Pertronix unit and stand by it, but at the moment cash is at a premium and the Hot Spark unit was about half the price.
I began with setting the timing via the instructions listed here - cranking, not running, and disconnected vacuum advance to exactly 6 before TDC. The one curiosity I noticed was the magnet collar. The instructions say to start with the taller one, which I did, and it provided clearance for the rotor with no problem. The problem was, no start. Nothing. So I switched to the shorter collar. It took some trying, but eventually she fired up. Seemed to run just fine with the new pickup. I'm curious if anyone else has tried the Hot Spark system and what kind of results you got with each collar.
I'll be switching to a Delta Mark Ten CDI system tomorrow to see if I get better starting results, and will keep you all posted on my progress. Thanks!
