Prepping and Painting a Sonett III Posted by BradW [Email] (#3273) [Profile/Gallery] (more from BradW) on Wed, 5 Apr 2023 10:08:25 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I'm helping my 15 y.o. son with his Sonett III project. We've successfully revived the car from long term inoperative status, taken it for a spin and even got pulled over first time out of the driveway (the officer said he couldn't give us a ticket because the car was, "Too cool.")
I would like some advice as we plan for painting the car. I've read many of the old posts on here about prepping fiberglass, and I have many hours/cars of paint experience from my teen years, but those were all metal bodies and paint formulations from the 70's. So any advice on the best paint/primer brand/chemistry to use would be appreciated.
In general this car's body is in pretty good shape, and the Sonett looks to me like an easier car to prep in terms of lacking trim, clips, etc. On the site here there's some discussion on whether it's better to take the bonnet and doors off or not, I'm leaning in the direction of taking them off.
This car is a resprayed yellow of indeterminate origin, showing white underneath in places. Is the white the gelcoat? I didn't recall a white option in the Sonett color chart.
Besides advice on fiberglass prep, are there any peculiar spots that need specific solutions? One that comes to mind is the drip rails around the doors and how the fiberglass curls up over the years away from the chrome trim (see pic attached). What's the best way to deal with this?
