Ha ha! No did not drain it first. This is a forgotten car that was parked for years. My son and I are bringing it back to life, so with the engine we first drained it, filled it, ran it to temp, then drained it, changed the filter and filled it again. With the tranny I intended to drive it and get it warm before draining but didn't want to drive it if it was dry. So was originally just topping it up but it took oil like a bottomless pit! Of course that's because I misinterpreted the manual and was measuring 'full' at the fill port. The Clymer's book instead shows the side port for measuring the level that Jonathan was talking about. So I put 3 3/4 quarts in a transmission that already had a quart in it! Drained 3 quarts out to get it back to level. So we'll go exercise that and then do a proper transmission drain and fill. Using 75 wt here in sunny California as summer has arrived.
