"74 Sonett, green, 87,000 miles, very good original condition, $2,500"
So my questions are:
What is considered high mileage on these engines?
depends.
How long will a properly maintained v4 last?
200,000-300,000 miles, maybe more. But now we gotta talk about what does "properly maintained" mean, that's a long topic. The chances that the vehicle you describe has been "properly maintained" are slim.
What should I be worried about at this mileage?
Lack of proper maintenance, rust, the fact that the car has 87K in 27 years which looks like an average of 3222 miles per year but in real life means it has sat still most of its life which is worse than being driven 20 miles twice a month, the possibility that it has 187K or 287K, possible misrepresentation by the seller, and that the proud seller's assertion of "very good original condition" while it may be very sincere is unlikely to be supported by an objective analysis.
Your best bet is to find someone local who can give you a competent and honest evaluation of its condition and tell you what it will take to put it into a good running state. This is different from an appraisal of its value, it is just a mechanical inspection.
I'd also like to say I'm really glad to have found this site! I had thought that it was impossible to find parts for these cars so I never seriously considered one. Now I see it is possible to get most things...
Yup, & plenty of willing help here. My comments are not meant to turn you off but to help you go into this with your eyes open and stay out of trouble.
