Saab Sonett III for beginner?

Hello.
I was hoping you guys could help me.
In the next couple of months I will be in a position to buy myself a second car. I won't have a great deal of money for the venture (I'm a graduate student with a bartending job on the side), but enough for probably a $5000 vehicle. Naturally I could get a 6-10 year old car with that, but I thought that I could get a classic car of some kind, since most car manufacturers stopped being interested in body styling about 20 years ago. I looked around online, thinking Mustang or something else, and I stumbled across the Saab Sonett III. WOW! I'd never seen a car as gorgeous as it, and I must now have one!!
Here's where you come in: I know next to nothing about auto repair, and even less about restoration. I'm willing to learn, but I question how much time my schedule would allow for it. Under these circumstances, do you think getting a Sonett would be a mistake? I'm also willing to put more money into it as time goes on, but $5000 is the max I could start with. Also, what kind of gas mileage do these cars get? I assume it's not too bad since it's only a four cylinder.
What I'm getting at basically is that I'm new to this whole thing and I'm looking for some beginning advice from someone who's been there.
If you have the time, I'd really appreciate a response. If not, that's cool, and I'm grateful you took the time to read this.
Many thanks,
Gregg Peel
