That half frazzled description of the "freewheel" was very entertaining. Yes all SAABs before the early 70s had this "coasting" gear built in as a vestage of the 2 stroke engine days. Apparently overrun in a two stroke engine is not a good thing.
A good alignment shop can diagnose the broken bits and get the car properly aligned to fix the steering problems. It may take a bit of trial an error to find a good alignment shop however. Most of these places are not interested in dealing with classic cars, especially "weird" one's like your Sonett ( oh I am envious).
For winter storage all that is required is to fill the gas tank with high octane and a proper 50/50 mix of water and coolant. The full tank deters condensation in the gas tank and the high octane assures a quick start up in the spring. Some people go to the trouble of oiling cylinders through spark plug holes and plugging up tailpipes and carb intakes to avoid unwanted rodent guests.
good luck...
