Neat to hear that you took on the Sonett project! I hope my little monster got you enticed a bit. On the bumpers....they are restorable to a certain extent. You can beat out the large sections of rust- chunks-flakes- and then get to grinding. You will need to use an abrasive 3M wheel. Grind away any surface rust that you can get to. I prefer to remove as much of the old steel backing plate as possible, even the bolt studs. I then work on the rubber itself, grinding off any oxidized material. Once clean of oxidation and accessible rust, the repair can take place. The replacement bolt/studs should be stainless, no more issue of rusting away. The channel/cavity inside the bumper does very well filled with a metallic-based epoxy. The goal is to FILL the cavity, thus encapsulating the rusted sections- and restoring a solid framework. The bolt/stubs are placed into proper position at the time of epoxy filling. This procedure is topped off with a good cure time, and then a cleanup and light topcoat of black lacquer. The paint conceals the epoxy color/repair, as well as sealing in the surface of the rubber. It works well and looks great for many years. Bob, I live close- call me any time for my nusty advise. -Jeff Plummer mail@plummerdesign.com
