I've got a sticky odo, too, but want to put off having it fixed, so here's what I did. If you just want a working odo and don't care about keeping things original -- or if you'd like to add a fun gadget to your car -- you might want to do the same.
What I did was get a "bicycle computer." You can get these online from such places as http://www.branfordbike.com, or at most local bike shops, for $30-40. (I got a VDO Cytec C-10 just because I liked the idea of a brand that "matched" my other VDO instrumentation.)
These bike-computer gizmos have two main parts: an LCD display unit about the size of a geek's wristwatch, and a magnetic pickup that you can mount on the transaxle case. A wire connects the two units (you may have to splice in a little extra wire to reach the dash.) The unit also comes with a small magnet, which you mount on a rotating part that comes within 1-5mm of the magnetic pickup. I attached the magnet to the inner driver with a cable tie.
With the parts mounted, you measure the exact circumference of your wheel (make a mark on the sidewall and on the garage floor, roll car forward exactly one full turn, make another mark on the floor, and measure between the marks -- it'll be a little over 6 ft) and program this measurement into the display unit. (My VDO unit lets you program two wheel sizes, handy in case you have "street" and "track" wheels.) You also set a clock that's built into the unit.
Now, by using the clock readings plus the rotations signalled by the magnetic sensor, the unit can display various fun kinds of data, depending on what model you get. My VDO unit displays exact speed in MPH (or KPH if you prefer); has a cumulative odometer plus two separate trip meters; and shows total trip time, average speed for trip, and maximum speed achieved (fun for track days -- see if you were really as brave as you thought!)
I mounted mine to the left of the instrument cluster, where it's out of the way but the reset buttons are easy to reach. As I said, it's a fun gadget, and lets me keep track of mileage accurately until I get around to pulling out my speedo and sending it off for a rebuild.
