If you added a LOT, I can see how it might be gettting back up into the cylinders and burning.
How? My first guess would be that it's urping up through the Positive Crankcase Ventilation system (which means that you might need a new PCV valve when this drama is over, in case your current one is clogged with oil; the PCV valve is the dark-colored tube that sticks up from the intermediate flange below the carb, and has a hose running from it to the nearby valve cover. Unscrew the valve and shake it; if you hear the ball rattling back and forth, it's OK... if not, it's plugged up and time for a new one.)
Anyway, if the problem goes away after you drain off the excess, then you've got it bagged. If not, you may still have to think about valve stem seals etc.
Worse yet, what if you drain some out and then NEXT time you check the oil it's above the full mark again? Then that suggests that something besides oil is getting into your oil pan -- the most likely suspect would be coolant, which could be seeping past a bad head gasket or even through a crack in the block or manifold. So, let's all just hope the problem was too much oil!
