Sounds like a vacuum leak to me, too. What this does is make your carb mixture 'way too lean, because air is getting into the engine without having any gas mixed into it at all. Running with the choke full on makes the carb run super-rich, which can compensate just enough to get it to run, sorta. But ya really want to fix it instead!
Chris's carb-spray test will help you spot the air leak if it's around the base of the carb... but don't forget that there are a lot of other places it can be leaking too, including the hose(s) to the distributor vacuum chamber and possibly the chamber itself (torn diaphragm.) Another possibility comes up if someone, sometime did some swapping with an engine out of a Saab 96. The 96 (at least the later ones) has power assist on the front disc brakes, and the vacuum source for the brake booster is a big honking vacuum hose fitting on the 'intermediate plate' that goes between the carb and the manifold (the PCV valve also screws into this plate.) If that power brake booster fitting isn't plugged, you've got a HUGE vacuum leak!
It's faintly possible that this kind of problem can be caused by clogged jets in the carb (yeah, I know you rebuilt it, but you'd be surprised how easy it is for some gunk to get in there when you put it back together) but I'd still bet on the vacuum leak, and besides it's easier to start checking that because you can do it without taking the @#$^ carb apart again...!
