I haven't had much luck with this either. Theoretically (according to the Sonett shop manual, that is) the best way is to sand out a fairly large, gradually sloping depression around the damage. Then you fill the depression with new glass mat and resin (you can get kits of this at auto parts stores) and sand it down so it pretty much matches the contours of the original hood. Then you level out the surface with filler and sand it, prime it and paint it just like any other body repair.

All that sounds pretty easy, but it leaves out the fact that you need to have a certain level of craftsmanship or you're going to wind up with a doggy-looking repair (which is what I got.) Also, if your crack is in a corner area (such as around the 'power bulge') rather than in a mostly flat area, it's really hard to make this technique work.

I've had some luck filling REALLY small cracks with 'spot putty' -- you've got to build it up above the crack level and then sand it down to match, which usually scuffs up the surrounding area so you've got to refinish that too. But it seems to be about the only way to get a good blend. If the previous owner already has made a big area, you may be stuck with having to do the rematting/sanding/refinishing trick as described above.
