No, it isn't necessary to have the SAAB holding jig and press, but man does it make the job easier. I've done several rebuilds using brass punches and a hydraulic press. On the first transmission I ever rebuilt I had trouble getting the gear off ahead of the bearing right behind the pinion gear. I needed to change the bearing so the gear had to come off. I was working at the gas company in Washington DC at the time and I took the shaft in to the vehicle repair garage and asked someone there to press it off. It took over 10 tons of pressure before the gear popped off. It had somehow heat-welded itself to the shaft, although I think it has a keyway on it to keep it from spinning and that was intact.
The thing you really need the SAAB tools for is the measurement between the center line of the differential and the face of the pinion gear. The shims between the rear cover and the rear pinion bearing and the pinion to ring gear backlash can be measured using regular measuring tools.
