Maybe you are thinking of an ANTI-roll bar? = part of front suspension.
As Bob and Paul have said, the ROLL bar (aka rollover bar) is the black metal tube that runs behind your head. It helps keep you from getting a flat-top haircut if you happen to flip your Sonett, and also provides something to which to attach the hinges for the back glass.
Incidentally, that fiberglass roof isn't as flimsy as you might think -- in addition to the rollover bar, there's also a heavy rectangular metal tube bonded in around the windshield (the rear-view mirror and visors screw into this) and metal reinforcements over the door frames.
Re the ANTI-roll bar -- earlier Saab 96es and I think some earlier Sonett V4 models did have anti-roll bars, but I don't believe the Sonett III ever did. Presumably with the Sonett's lower center of gravity than the 96, Saab didn't think it was needed. Also, a front anti-roll bar increases understeer, of which the Sonett has plenty already thanks to its nose-heavy weight distribution. Since the Sonett shares its front suspension parts with the 96, you'll often find that the lower A-arms still have the mount points for an anti-roll bar, but they're just vestigial appendages, like your appendix. If you're going to autocross the car and have mounted wider tires, you might want a front (and rear) bar, but for normal driving I'd say leave it the way it is.
