It does come out through the passenger compartment, but it turns out there are several tricks to it:
-- You've gotta unclamp and remove the tang that actuates the microswitch (inside the engine compartment.) It's just held on with a little hose clamp and slides off easily.
-- The forked end that goes to the headlight bellcrank does NOT come off (welded in place.)
-- Inside the car, 'way up under the dash, there's a spring around the pullrod that bears against a bushing that goes through the firewall, and is held in place at the outer end by another little hose clamp. You have to remove this clamp so you can push the rod IN far enough to drop it down below the dash. Then you pull the rod OUT, turning it different ways to navigate its various kinks along its path.
-- When the forked end reaches the firewall bushing, it will be too big to go through -- you've got to pop out the bushing (toward the inside of the car) and remove it along with the rod.
Incidentally, you would NOT believe how many kinks, crooks and bends are in this thing once you get it out where you can see all of it at once! You'd think it was mostly straight, but in fact it looks like cooked spaghetti!
