Leaving the ignition on that long could have burned up your coil, but I don't know if that would cause your distributor to smoke. I just got though puting the Pertronix ignition in my 68 tonight; surprised how much it changed the timing. Seems to run smooth but at idle the needle on the tack jumps to about 2K every 20 sec. or so. I can't really hear the engine rpm change though. Does anyone know if the existing wire to the - side of the coil is supposed to be spliced in with the new black wire from the distributor or left off. The diagrams only show the new blck wire. Back to your problem Mike. If you have an ohmmeter check between the + and - of the coil. according to Pertronix inst. you need at least 3ohms of resistance. I've got a stock coil for now and it read 4.5 ohms. It seems there is a good possibility that the wrong resistance might cause the smoking.
