I think I know what the problem (slime)is. I had the same problem develop after my Sonett was introduced to a moist climate here. A clerk at a local auto store told me that it is probably dirt and oil from the driver's hands over the last 32 years(I have a 71 Sonett) which has accumulated on and inside the steering wheel material! I cleaned it off with a product called Spray Nine. No more dirty hands or pants now! I guess just like oil and dirt on the road lifts when it rains, so does the slime on a dirty Sonett steering wheel when its damp.
