The current-generation Nissan Murano is available with a CVT, and at least a couple Audis are as well. For a time, a CVT was available in the Honda Civic. One of the new Ford sedans - I think the Five Hundred, but maybe the Futura - will also feature a CVT. And, of course, don't forget the early attempts - I think DKW had a CVT for time.
The major limitation with a CVT is torque handling. The Audi and Nissan units were both specifically developed to be able to handle torque of a "reasonably sized" engine. I don't know much about the CVT that Ford is producing, but I believe it will be attached to the 3.0l or 3.5l Duratec V6, so I'm guessing it can handle some power as well.
A CVT attached to a rotary in a Sonett would be fantastic, but the chances of finding one of them designed to be used in the Sonett's north-south engine layout is not likely. Getting a transverse engine in a Sonett would require - how shall I say - some work. :)
Even just getting a rotary in a Sonett requires some work. There are only a few transmissions that I am aware of that are theoretically compatible with the Sonett's drivetrain layout, including ones from VW, Porsche, and Subaru. Early Audi boxes might also work, but I think they are simply too large. Forget about turboing - even if it could fit, I doubt the fiberglass would much enjoy the heat. Maybe a very small turbo at very low boost. But seriously, why? A properly tuned 13B is not tangibly larger than a 12A, and capable of an easy 200hp. That is more than enough to properly motivate a 1700lb car. A 200hp Sonett would simply be scary.
