I just went throught the same process and picked up a '73 shortly ago, and the answer to your question depends greatly on these two sequential sub-questions:
1. How ambitious of a mechanic/restorer are you?
2. If the answer to #1 is "not very," then how much dough are you willing to pay someone else to do it for you? :)
In either case, the price you pay should be a fair reflection of the vehicle's need of TLC. Specific things to check... completeness - parts aren't impossible to find, but they aren't necessairly easy to find, either. A short run and limited after-market supply may pose a challenge to you. Rust! I know you mentioned it, but even the slightest amount will warrant your attention once the car becomes yours. Title? Make sure there is one! Aside from these things, it's just like buying any other project. To me, any vehicle can be restored. It is just a matter of how much time and money it will require, and how deeply I fall in love with her! :)
Good luck!
Jeff
