The Sonett frames were mostly made from cold rolled sheet metal that was close to U.S. Standard Sheet Metal 20 Gage in thickness thirty + some years ago. 20 Gage is 0.0359 inches (0.91186 mm) and I believe that the Sonett's sheet metal thickness was closer to 21 Gage, which is 0.329 inches (0.83566 mm). Perhaps Bengt in Sweden may know and post the Europen thickness? FYI I recently read an article by Toney Whitney "Automobile steel has never been stronger". Toney writes,"We remain very faithful to steel and, now and again , aluminum, for building vehicle bodies...But the thing about current steel is that they're a lot different from those of years gone by...According to the North American Iron and Steel Institute, the steel used in our vehicles has never been stronger... It's an interesting fact that 70 per cent of the steel used in automotive production today didn't even exist just 10 years ago...Auto components are more dent and up to 30 per cent stronger than they were 10 years ago...It's the proud boast of the institute that the properties os steel-strenght, strain rate, formability, manufacturability and response to heat treatment- are unmatched by any other material available to automakers...As far as usage goes, steel has maintained an average of 55 per cent of the curb weight of a typical passenger car over the past 20 years."
The Sonett was the first North American front wheel drive sports car and power to weight ratio is an important cosideration when doing a restoration. 16 gage is 0.0598 inches ( 1.51892 mm), so Greg it's more than 1.8 times the thickness and therefore the weight of the original piece!
