It sounds like your on the right track with the spring. I would change it out with a stiffer spring. Even if you go too stiff, making it a bit awkward at the pedal, it might confirm that it is a linkage problem. It could be something binding or possibly too much slop. The Weber is a good long term idea but you should be able to fix this problem without too much trouble.
