The stock fan drains a bit of power all the time. The electric fan might add a bit to the load on the alternator, but it's negligable by comparison. People often remove the stock fan and install an electric one when the bearing fails. The replacement bearings are available from a guy in Finland, and maybe from Rolf of SAAB Klubben, the Swedish vintage SAAB club.

The failure of the phenolic timing gear is caused by gear wear or misalignment. Misalignment is usually due to balance shaft bearing wear caused by over-tightening the fan belt, putting a side load on the bearings. Replacement of the bearings requires engine removal, as the shaft comes out the back. Timing gears are getting harder to find, but I heard recently that a fiber replacement is being made of a different material than the earlier ones. Air conditioned cars are supposed to have a steel timing gear, _if_ the dealer replaced it when they installed the AC kit. Sonetts with AC had all of the underhood parts installed before arriving at the dealership. The dealer finished the job by installing all of the under-dash parts.

The hollow tube between the tops of the spring towers acts as a overflow tank, so I don't see any advantage to adding one.

I would also assess the rust situation below the reservoirs, since spillage will result in the paint being dissolved. Check the floor and firewall around the clutch and brake masters. (How do I know about this? I'm cleaning one now that I'm building a transmission for.)
