There's supposed to be a spring in the shift-lever mechanism to help keep you from shifting into reverse accidentally. If there's no resistance at all when you move the lever toward reverse, your spring may be too weak, out of position, or AWOL.
Considering the amount of damage that can be done by downshifting from 3rd to reverse when you meant to downshift from 3rd to 2nd, a lot of people think the spring is too wimpy. I've heard from several people who have fabricated positive reverse lockouts, usually involving some sort of pin that replaces the spring and has to be pulled back to get into reverse. Hard to explain in text, but if you took the cover off the shift lever mechanism and stared at it for a while, I'll bet you'd get a good idea for how to do it.
