A sway bar (anti-roll bar) will reduce body roll, and it may improve transient response by limiting side-to-side weight transfer (which may be why Jack A. liked them in his autocross car.)

But it will also reduce total adhesion at that end of the car. That's how it works -- adding more roll stiffness at the front increases understeer by making the front end of the car slide sooner, and adding roll stiffness at the back increases oversteer by making the back end of the car slide sooner. You can add so much roll stiffness that your car will corner almost flat, and that may make you feel like it's "cornering on rails," but you've reduced the actual cornering adhesion.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the bar actually makes an independent suspension less independent, by transferring forces from one wheel to the other. Add too much roll stiffness and you'll find that one-wheel bumps upset the other wheel as well, which can cost you grip (and control) in a bumpy corner.

Ideally what you do to get flatter cornering, rather than relying on heavy anti-roll bars, is to position the car's center of gravity as low as possible relative to the suspension's instantaneous roll center. Then, if necessary, you can use thin, light anti-roll bars to fine-tune the understeer/oversteer balance. A Sonett's center of gravity is considerably lower than a 96's and lower yet than a 95's, and I suspect this is why SAAB felt the larger cars' front anti-roll bars were not necessary on the Sonett.
