Chris, try modifing the plastic freewheeling shifter. Grind or file a cutout on the outside of the slot to force the engagement of the teeth further into the freewheel hub. You then place the bolt onto this new cutout on the outside of the slot. There is more movement inside than what the slot allows. You want to move the plastic shifter to the rear of the car as much as you can.
