here's my $.02
there were 2 types of levers for engaging the freewheel, the early, steel version, and the later, more like plastic. The story goes that the wear really occurs when the freewheel is not fully engaged. It buggers up the teeth on the input shaft. I suppose it is possible to make a device that pushes the freewheel hub farther into the primary shaft receiver, but I also assume it is possible to elongate the hole in the metal or plastic lever. The trick really is keeping the lever in that position. This all is assuming that the dogs on the end of the primary shaft have some meat left on them. I doubt it.
so, yes, I have seen folks weld the hub to the receiver, it is ugly but it works. Since the course of action is to replace the primary shaft either way, what is the harm of ruining this one?
