Using premium, price and theory on fuel economy Posted by Caarma [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: 9-3 Aero: Premium fuel effects fuel economy?, Sarah, Wed, 31 Aug 2005 05:11:37 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
First of all, premium is cheap today relative to regular unleaded on a percentage basis. (Ten cents a gallon over $3 is only 3.3% extra which is lower than when gas was cheaper). I think it's the easiest performance upgrade you can make on your car. You really notice the extra punch even on my 1997 900S and 2004 9-3 Linear. Now if you're trying to save money though, a dollar is a dollar and using regular is the way to go then.
I also have a theory on how premium fuel gives you more torque at the same rpm so assuming a driver likes a certain level of acceleration, then she/he revs it less, thereby saving fuel. This applies to city driving. On the highway, one should also use less fuel to get the same required horsepower to maintain a certain speed. Of course, this is balanced with the lower energy content of the premium fuel and I'm now wondering if more fuel flows to get that extra power when you use premium or if it just a function of more power per gallon.
Any thoughts?
