Thought I'd chime in here since I've personally researched this a little bit with my Saab 9-3 Linear. Upon purchasing my car, the salesman said it only needed mid-grade fuel. So for probably the first 3-5 thousand miles thats what I put in. However, I noticed the acceleration didn't seem quite as strong as others I had test drove when I bought mine. After reading this board and finally looking at the manual I found out that all 9-3's recommend premium. After filling up with premium, I noticed a definite difference in performance. Also, I have driven the exact same route (about 400 mile trip) several times in the past year and noticed a definite increase in gas mileage when using premium. Apparently our cars have a sophisticated knock sensor system in the engine and is most likely retarding the timing to prevent pre-detonation which is very damaging to the engine. Thus, we are getting less power out of a gallon of regular compared to premium. The difference in mpg is close to the cost benefit of using regular and thus seems to negate any significant savings when filling up with regular. As further proof of this, Car & Driver did a test sometime in the last five years comparing the performance on a dynometer of various cars on regular vs. premium fuel. One of these cars happened to be a Saab 9-5 Aero. It was the only car that made significantly more hp when on premium (something like 20 hp!).

If you've got an oldsmobile with the 3.8 litre based off of a the small block from 50 years ago, you're wasting your money by filling up with premium. However, Saab's 2.0 litre turbocharged is much more sophisticated and can wring out more power and efficiency from premium. This is why my Saab 9-3 is actually faster than my wife's Oldsmobile Intrigue and gets roughly 50% better fuel economy.

Hope this helps
