250hp vs 210hp.....old vs new..... Posted by Mike Lynch [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Do I Buy?, PDX Saab, Sun, 15 Oct 2006 14:49:35 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The 9-5 Aero has 40 more horsepower and the torque punch hits lower making it feel even stronger at lower speeds. Although the 9-5 is slightly heavier I think the 9-5 is quicker. The 9-5 is very traditional Saab tech, the 9-3SS is new territory. Also the 9-5s are bigger and some folks just like the smaller car, me I like the bigger car and the more traditional car, but I'm way old.
Both manuals are OK, nothing fantastic about the shift linkages. The 9-3SS has a better shift linkage, but it does feel like the cable linkage it is. The 9-5 manual linkage is just an OK one, long wide throws. The 9-3SS snicks better.
The 9-5 auto is superlative with a programmable sport button, but alas no slap shifter, paddles yes on the '03s and up, but awkward to use. The 9-3SS has no programmable sport setting, it learns the sport setting, but it does have a superlative slap shifter and steering wheel buttons too, that are engaged by a quick slap, instead of a careful selection as in the 9-5. I really use the manual slap shifter on a 9-3SS, on a 9-5 it's just a toy, but for day to day driving I like the 9-5 in sport, both are excellent trannies well suited to the cars.
