a) the sludge devil doesn't live in the 9-3SS
b) the 9-3 is a far sportier drive, but is much tighter inside. Since you are accustomed to an OG 9-3, you might be happiest with a 9-5 Wagon.
The 9-5 standard shifts a lot like your 9-3, the 9-3SS has a much "tighter" feel. Some people on the 9-5 line have replaced the transmission mount rubber bushing with polyeurothane and report much better shift and clutch feel.
In the end, the two products are different enough that you need to make your own decision. If you decide on the 9-5, do be sure that there is *no* sludge in it, and then use synthetic oil and change it every 5000 miles.
