I have a 2005 5 speed 2.0T I bought new. Now has 215K miles.
The car has been pretty bulletproof with 7.5K oil changes with Mobil1.
Original clutch and the transmission fluid only changed when I did a driveshaft for a torn boot.
I did briefly have one with the 6 speed that Saab bought back. It was very crunchy shifting when cold and a transmission swap did not fix it. I think this may have been a common problem for that year at least.
It sounds like you have a decent mechanic as the car is obviously an orphan and most shops will not have a Tech2 that is needed to work on it. Obviously you would want to have that shop inspect it before you buy. There will be a huge range of conditions for a car as old as these. Ideally get one from a rust free state. I am in California and still on the original factory exhaust.
Totally agree on staying away from the 2.8!
