Why do people trade 2-3 year old cars to dealers?

If your car is under factory warranty, you should sell it yourself to another private party. This may sound simplistic, but in such a situation, what does a dealer add to the transaction?
For example, lets say your car has a trade-in value of $15,000 and a private transaction sale value of $18,000. Why, in god's name (besides not wanting the hassle) would you trade the car to the dealer and get $15,000 and let him sell it to someone for $18,000? Why not just sell it to someone yourself for $16,500? You both profit and cut out the middle-man, the dealer, for that's all he is.
