Say you think you can think you can get $1,000 more for your car as opposed to what the dealer would give. Let's say the probability of that is 70%, so 70% * $1,000 = $700 "guaranteed money." Say it takes 20 hours to sell it, in total time of prepping the car (car wash, etc.), taking prospective buyers on test drives (including the time waiting for them to show up to the house), preparing ads, answering emails and phone calls, etc. So $700/20 = $35 an hour that you've made "guaranteed" (i.e., as a probabilistic estimate when you're deciding beforehand whether to trade or sell). Frankly, I don't have a lot of free time, and I value it at a lot more than $35/hour. Life's too short to worry about every last nickle. I'd rather spend more time with my family than hassling with buyers . . . .
