To be a smart aleck you don't grow your own food, make your own clothes, build/design your own computers or build your own houses do you? Many folks don't begrudge the dealer a 20% mark-up on a trade in because the mark-up on what they do is way more than that.
There are definitely safety and liability issues in selling your own car. Money handling, strangers coming to your house.
Most buyers of more expensive cars need financing, trade ins or both. There's payoffs to be handled, DMV, and other issues that CAN indeed be handled by private parties, but generally exceed their time and patience.
You said it, "not wanting the hassle" is worth how much?
