Not on the Proving Grounds - not by a long shot... The Linear outperformed the woefully 1.8t. In fact, of all the cars, I would have rated the 1.8t 2nd nicest next to the 9-3 Sports Sedan, but every single car in the Proving Grounds; the BMW 325i, Mercedes C240, and even the Volvo S40 (although the engine whine on full acceleration made you feel sorry for the car) was more powerful. The base Linear 9-3 Sport Sedan was way more powerful than the 1.8t. In fact, I don't understand the Arc at all because it's essentially a prettied up Linear. You either pay the bucks and go for the performance of the Vector or go economical (if you can even say that about the 9-3SS Linear - more about that in a moment) and get the Linear which has equal performance to the Arc and blows away the 1.8t anyway.
My Motto is: Just Test Drive It! I look at these S40's on the highway and I have to wonder if these folks only test drove a single vehicle...
However, that said, who was focused on Volvos, came away from the Proving Grounds with no doubts that her next car was going to be a 9-3 Sports Sedan, but the prices get so high so fast she had to let go of her Vector wishful thinking and focus on a Linear (we agreed there was no sense in spending extra money on an Arc).Even so, the price of the Linear was much higher than expected... You might actually go to a dealer and have them give you the REAL price first and then check that out vs the 1.8t... then, and only then (and this coming from one of the most biased Saab owners around), you might see a dollars to power equation that could lead you to the 1.8t - CAVEAT - I couldn't settle for the lack of power in the 1.8t, period. I would've gone with a base Linear (with standard Turbo of course - all 9-3 Sports Sedans have the kick ass Saab Turbo).
