I usually let it idle while I adjust mirrors, stereo, etc. before driving off after the car has been sitting for a while. However that is not really necessary with the newer turbos and synthetic or semisynthetic oils that come in today's new cars. I avoid driving in a way that will use lots of boost until the car is at normal operating temperature. As for the cool down, I still do it because I developed the habit with my 87 Thunderbird Turbo Coupe which I owned for 13 years and 141,000 miles. It was still strong when I sold the car and never had any turbo or engine problems. My 9-3 replaced that car. Older generation turbos required the idling to allow hot oil to drain out of the turbo and be replaced by "cooler" oil to minimize coking, where the oil would crystalize at extreme temperatures and then act like sand on the sleeve bearings used in turbochargers. Our turbos are improved with various alloys and means of cooling, plus the synthetic and semisynthetic oils are more resistent to extreme temperatures, so cooling down the turbo is not as necessary. I usually shut the car off after idling a few seconds in routine driving, and let it idle for around 2 minutes when I have been pushing it hard. So far I have 98,800 miles on this Saab with its turbocharger. Good oil and regular oil changes is critical to the life of a turbo.
