For me the reliability issues of my '01 9-3 were offset by the balance of the utility and performance of the old hatch design. I always thought of it as having 80% of the utility of a Ford Explorer AND 80% of the sportiness of a BMW 3-Series at 80% of the price of either.
However, during the first 30k miles the dealer did about $10k worth of repairs, so I decided to get a '04 9-3SS. It seems I lost the utility but gained nothing in reliability, as during the first 5k miles the dealer will have replaced a computer, brakes, a steering column and the audio system (going on 2 weeks to repair, and still counting) on my SS.
My next car won't be a Saab. I am looking at the next generation Lexus IS300.
