Ok, talked to the mechanic again and feel a lot better. He told me they found coolant in the oil and would gladly send in the oil to be tested to make sure, but was pretty sure it was the blown head gasket. I really do trust the guy...he's been a friend to the family and has done work for us in the past several times. He also said that he'd take it step by step, letting us know what he finds with the head off, and that he'd take note of what kind of job was done on it 6000 miles ago (if one was done at all) and would be replacing the timing chain, tensioners, guides and whatever else goes along with that but would be able to get a better idea of how that all looked with the head off. I'm beginning to think the dealer never changed the gasket at all when it was in for service last, as I mentioned to the mechanic that the car was only in for an afternoon for the change of the head gasket, and he said it was nearly impossible to do that big of a job in an afternoon. Also, the dealer allegedly did some other work to the car that day involving the struts in the same afternoon.

I again asked our mechanic today what the dealer said and they said absolutely there was NO grey area and they were NOT responsible for the head gasket going bad so quickly. It has been more than twelve months (24 months in March) that the work was done, but only 6000 miles. I'm not sure exactly who to take this up with, but it definately seems that the dealer is somewhat responsible for doing a faulty job. The car has NEVER overheated. In fact, it was taken in for an oil leak that our independent mechanic found at an O-ring but we had to have it replaced at the dealer under warranty. The dealer said it was the head gasket, and never did replace the O-ring and within a month, the oil leak was back. Any suggestions on if I'll get anywhere by complaining about this dealer to Saab or with the dealer itself?
