Blown Head gasket after only 6000 miles?

I am facing a bit of a dilema. We have a 1999 9-5 SE 4cyl with 54,000 miles. At 48,000 miles, one month before the factory warranty ran out, we had some service work done on the car to get it into shape before the warranty expired. One of these things was the head gasket being replaced. Well, 6000 miles later, the car is leaking serious amount of oil, there's white sludge in the oil and the independent mechanic says he has reason to believe the head is bad and it's not just from condensation. (this is a family friend, trusted mechanic, so I really trust him) I tell him it was allegedly replaced only 6000 miles ago, so he calls the dealer who did it and gets the run around and they say there is no warranty on that job. So, now it's going to cost us $1000 to get the head gasket redone, and also fix an oil hose that's leaking. My question is...is this normal for this to happen after only 6000 miles?? The car isn't driven much...it has been almost two years since it's been replaced but only 6000 miles. Also, the mechanic says he could save us some money by doing the timing belt/chain (can't remember what he said) while the head is off, since he's seen problems with them at around this mileage. That brings the total for all the work to around $2k. I don't even mind spending the money, I just feel like we got a run around at the dealer who allegedly fixed the head gasket that is bad again. Any ideas? Is it plausible that they just did a terrible job fixing it or possibly didn't even replace it at all??
Thanks in advance
Heidi
