Attached is a link to the Saab TSB recommending all vehicles below a specifiec VIN have their head bolts re-tightened.
Saab blames coolant loss and oil loss to loose head bolts, and then gives three specific reasons for this to happen: 1) thermal cycling, 2) factory installed bolts with a wax coating, and 3) the factory torquing process.
We can't do anything about cause #1, and cause #3 will be eliminated by the torque process specified in the TSB. But what about #2?
If the factory bolts have a coating which can lead to the bolts loosening over time, why not replace them. New bolts are under $4 each and have a coating which won't cause future loosening (per the TSB). For under $40 dollars this problem will be eliminated. That is why I bought new bolts.
