Me too!....A very busy day in the garage....(long) Posted by MI-Roger [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Re-torqued head bolts today -- findings below. (long), Aerophile, Fri, 4 Feb 2005 20:06:06 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I replaced the head bolts on my 2000 9-5 this afternoon by following the TSB torque process. Following Dean's advice from earlier in the week, I verified an existing torque of equal to/greater than 44 ft-lbs first before starting the removal/replacement process. All my original bolts were tight and "felt" as if they all had very close to the same torque when I removed them.
I eye-balled an angular movement of 45 degrees when tightening from 30 ft-lbs to 44 ft-lbs. This translates into 15 ft-lbs for every 45 degrees of wrench movement. Making a leap of logic, I would guess the final torque on the new bolts is approx 75 ft-lbs. Having used my breaker bar on numerous occasions to loosen my 80 ft-lb lug bolts, I would guess my intial bolts were also slightly less than 80 ft-lbs. This is by "feel" only, nothing scientific!
Other work: replaced fuel filter, replaced engine air filter, changed oil and filter, new plugs, and new valve cover gasket. I also reworked my aftermarket, UK sourced, foglight today to acommodate the cornering lamp and fixture vent/drain which were de-contented in 2001. The worst part of all this work was the new valve cover gasket!
As a follow-up to my reversal of the PCV update a couple of weeks ago, it appears my oil usage problem had disappeared. Dip stick readings indicate the engine consumed no oil during the 1000 miles since I did the reversal.
Before I could start on the Saab I had to fix our van. I installed a new EGR valve gasket and cleaned the Throttle body to solve a cold start shudder/surging condition my wife reported to me at breakfast.
All of this was after my wife and I installed new fireplace doors!
