I've been looking at a couple of CPO 2001 Aero's. The dealers selling them all seem to list about the same selling price, and on initial contact, don't seem to want to deal much on those prices.
One car is a 2001 Aero 5-speed, 29K, in service 10/01, CPO warranty to 10/07. All service on car documented, nothing much in the way of repairs - standard stuff like headlamps, all 3 major services done (10K, 20K, 30K), a SID, a radio, a thermostat, and a front anti-sway bracket replaced. So the car has 2 years & 9 months extended warranty left. Asking $20.7K, that's it. Car was driven in major NE metro (Boston) where snow is common, road conditions (potholes, etc.) not great. Off lease 2 months ago, now at selling dealer.
Another is a 2001 Aero 5-speed, 27K, in service 2/01, CPO warranty to 2/07.
Fully documented service records. 1st 3 years of usage, almost no repairs: DI unit, headlamps. It came off lease after 3 years and was bought by the dealer who now has it on his lot. He's had it about 9 months, and has only run it about 300 miles since then - says they rotate the cars the sales staff uses to keep things in shape.
Since he's had it, the BBS wheels were replaced under warranty (corrosion issue), a SID was replaced and there was a repair for "Three Way Cat. Conv.", which I assume means an expensive exhaust component. I will check out this repair record when I look at the car. This car spent its entire 3-year lease period in suburban Maryland, outside of DC. Selling price almost the same as the other one: 20.9K, but I sense some flexibility in there.
So (I finally get to the question!...) my reasoning is that whichever car I might decide to buy, I'm paying about $2K or so over what I could buy a similar vehicle on eBay with maybe several months of original warranty left, and probably 15-20K more mileage. I've looked at maybe 50 or 60 of those Saab internal warranty reports over the last year or so, and these two are among the shortest. I have no problem with buying on eBay, for that matter.
How would you look at the trade-offs on the Maryland Aero vs. the Boston Aero, given that the Boston car has about 9 months more extended warranty left? How about the fact that the MD car has been sitting around (more or less) at the (cold climate) dealer for the last 9 months?
TIA for your collective wisdom!
